1999-2022 Chevy Silverado Oil Capacity & Oil Type Free Lookup

Chevy Silverado oil capacity and oil type vary from model to model, year to year, engine to engine, and weather to weather.

A 2020 Silverado 1500 3.0L V6 takes 7 quarts of 0W-20 oil (All TEMPS) while a 2020 Silverado 1500 2.7L I4 needs 6 quarts of 5W-30 (All TEMPS) or 0W-30 (Below -29°C).

When replacing the engine oil, you should do it with only the right products. Different engine models require different oil viscosity to effectively lubricate moving parts.

And if you live in cold regions, the oil you buy should work well under that low temperature.

This article covers everything you must know about 1999-2022 Chevy Silverado oil capacity and oil types.

Oil Types And Suitable Oil Viscosity For Chevy Silverado

Chevrolet Silverado
Your choice of engine oil depends on the Chevrolet Silverado model year and the engine type. Credit: commons.wikimedia.org

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. The gasoline may be responsible for power production, but without appropriate engine oil, its life becomes short. Oil continuously circulates in the engine to lubricate all moving parts to reduce friction that might generate heat and cause wear.

Your choice of engine oil will significantly affect the engine’s life. You also need to change the oil at the most appropriate time. Luckily, the onboard oil life monitoring system checks the condition of the oil and informs you when a change is necessary. But what factors determine the type of engine oil to use?

Your choice of engine oil depends on the Chevrolet Silverado model year and the engine type. When looking for engine oil for your pickup truck, consider its viscosity. This is the thickness of the oil. Different standards suit various engine types and climatic conditions.

For the Silverado 1500, the most recommended oil types are the SAE 5W-30 or SAE 10W-30. What do these coded specifications mean? Let us break it down for easy understanding.

SAE – Society of Automotive Engineers

5 – Oil viscosity at low temperature (Winter Viscosity)

W – Winter

30 – Oil viscosity at high temperature (Summer Viscosity)

The lower the winter viscosity, the lower temperatures are accepted by the oil. The higher the summer viscosity, the higher temperatures the oil can accept.

5W30 oil has a winter viscosity grade of five, which means that it is less viscous at low temperatures than 10w30 oil. The summer viscosity grade of 5W-30 oil is 30 meaning it’s less viscous at high temperatures than 5w50.

Consider engine type and size and ambient temperature when looking for engine oil. You need to know the engine model year and whether it is a diesel or gas engine. Also, consider the weather. Some engine oil types are best for cold conditions, while others work best in a hot environment.

If your Silverado has a light-duty diesel engine under the hood, Dexos2 full-synthetic engine oil is the best choice. But if it has a heavy-duty Duramax diesel engine, go for engine oil with higher viscosity. Gasoline engines use Dexos1 full-synthetic oils. These specifications are on the label. So, check before you buy.

Chevrolet made a series of engines over this period with varying oil requirements. Before you do any oil change, check the manual for what the manufacturer recommends for your Chevy engine.

Chevrolet Silverado was first released in 1998 as a 1999 model. These first-generation pickup trucks had a 195 hp 4.3-liter V6, a 255 hp 4.8-liter V8, or a 270-hp 5.3-liter V8 engine. Other variants introduced later had higher performance.

The LU3 Vortec Silverado Classic 4.3L V6 needs 10W30 (Above -18°C) and 5W30 (All TEMPS), but  SAE 5W30 is preferred. The 4.8L V8 engines require 10W30 (Above -18°C)

5W30 (All TEMPS), but SAE 5W30 is preferred.

On the other hand, 5.3L V8 6 needs 10W30 (Above -18°C) and 5W30 (All TEMPS). So, SAE 5W30 is preferred.

But once again, the operating temperature or weather coefficient depends on the environmental temperature. You can check with the car manufacturer or authorized dealer in your region about the oil type you should use.

Refer to the chart below for the specific oil capacity.

The 1999-2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 had either the Vortec 5.3L V8 or 6.0L V8 engine under the hood. The 6.0 Liter Vortec engine by General Motors is also based on the small-block V8 platform. It was first introduced in 1999 and was in production up to 2019 when Vortec 6.2 replaced it.

The Vortec 6.0 had nine different variations throughout its production years. It managed to stay in production for that long because of its reliability and dependability.

The LQ4 is the most common Vortec 6.0 Chevy engine. Most trucks manufactured between 1999 and 2007 had them. If you have a Silverado 2500 made within this period, the most likely engine under the hood is LQ4. But you have to check to confirm because there are some exceptions.

Both 5.3L and 6.0L engines in Silverado 2500 have an oil capacity of 6 quarts and use oil viscosity of 10W-30 (Above -18°C) or 5W-30 (All TEMPS), which are what the manufacturer recommends for optimal performance and a long lifespan.

The same trend from the previous generations continues here. Just refer to the discussion on the 2014-2019 Silverado 2500HD. The engine features don’t change. You will still find a 6.0L gas V-8 or an LML Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine in 3500HD. The 6.0L engine needs 6 quarts while the other one requires 10 quarts of oil.

These require SAE 5W-30 for gasoline and SAE 15W-40 for diesel engines. But for ambient temperature before 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the diesel engine needs SAE 5W-40 oil.

Apart from the design modification for more towing and hauling power, the Silverado 3500HD has all other features similar to 2500HD.

These models also had two engine options: a standard 8-quart-oil 6.6L V-8 L8T and a 10-quart-oil L5P Duramax diesel 6.6L V-8. The only difference is the oil capacity of the 6.6L V-8 L8T, which is 2 quarts more.

The recommended oil types remain unchanged. Buy SAE 5W-30 and SAE 15W-40 for gasoline and diesel engines, respectively. The only exception is when you live in cold regions where the temperature drops to below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If that is the case, the oil viscosity to buy should be 5W-40.

Conclusion

Choosing the right oil type and servicing your engine on time will help extend its lifespan and enhance its efficiency. Oil helps to lubricate different engine parts and reduces temperature due to friction.

If you want to buy a replacement engine oil, consider your engine type and model year and decide appropriately.
